Alumni Journeys: On the Beach into the Ocean with Kedrick Redding

In the world of alum success stories, few tales are as inspiring as that of Kedrick Redding. A proud Bethune-Cookman graduate, Kedrick’s journey from the Worlds Most Famous Beach to the Ocean of Soul is remarkable. Our discussion with Kedrick Redding explores his career’s pivotal moments, personal experiences, and the wisdom he shares with aspiring alums.

Kedrick Redding, a 2006 graduate of BCU, began his journey as a music enthusiast and dedicated student. He was a top trombone player in the band and eventually became the head section leader. Beyond the band, Kedrick was actively involved in Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Fraternity of America, Inc., reflecting his commitment to music and community.

Homecoming at B-CU

When asked about his emotions before returning to BCU, Kedrick exudes excitement and enthusiasm. Unfortunately, the band would not be traveling to the game, but the opportunity to return home and perform at his alma mater was electrifying, even if it remained a dream. He cherished the idea of being seated across from the legendary band that molded him and was prepared to give an outstanding performance, a sentiment his mentor, Donovan Wells, instilled. “It would have been a surreal experience to be seated across from the legend and the band that made me,” Redding noted.

Standout Moments

Kedrick’s journey post-BCU has been extraordinary and filled with memorable moments. His current role as the Wind Ensemble Director and Marching Band Assistant Director at Texas Southern University has been gratifying. A standout moment in his career was when the wind ensemble was invited to perform at the 2023 HBCU Band Director’s Consortium in Atlanta, GA. Another highlight was the band’s performance at WrestleMania in 2022. For Kedrick, it was significant as he is an avid WWE fan. Additionally, only two marching bands had ever performed at WrestleMania, including the one he had the pleasure of being a part of.

Low Moments on the Journey

Kedrick acknowledges that, like any career, his journey had its low points. One particularly challenging aspect has been losing students to mental health issues, adverse social circumstances, and violence. He added that we must “remind ourselves that experiencing challenges during our careers is common and are often opportunities for personal and professional growth.” He emphasizes the pivotal role of music programs in schools, offering students opportunities to change their life trajectories. Kedrick shared the deeply saddening stories of two of his students, Derrico Moore and Carldarius Patrick, both of whom were tragically lost to violence. Their memories continue to inspire Kedrick to impact his students’ lives positively.

The Marching Cats

As a former Marching Wildcat, Kedrick Redding has experienced countless unforgettable moments. Some of his favorites include performing at NFL games, sharing the stage with Shaggy at MTV Rock N Jock in 2001, and contributing to the motion picture “Drumline.” The band allowed him to travel, meet new people, and form lifelong friendships with his fellow bandmates.

Inspiration for Young Alumni

When asked to share advice for young aspiring alums, Kedrick offers valuable insight. He encourages them to focus on personal and professional growth and development. More importantly, he emphasized that they “should not let others’ opinions define their worth”. His parting words remind us to aspire to be legendary in our own right.

Kedrick Redding’s journey from the halls of BCU to becoming a musical maestro at Texas Southern University is a testament to the power of passion, dedication, and the pursuit of excellence. His experiences, both triumphant and challenging, serve as a source of inspiration and guidance for all aspiring alums. Kedrick’s story demonstrates that with unwavering determination, the possibilities are limitless.

All Hail to Thee.
