Enter The Ave: Empowering Voices, Celebrating People, and Igniting Change

If you’ve ever attended, visited, or even walked through the campus of Bethune-Cookman University, you’re familiar with the stretch of road better known as, Dr Mary Mcleod Bethune Boulevard

Before we get into who we are, we’d like to share with you who we used to be. Back in 2019, we created an apparel company called Wildcat Wearhouse. It was founded by me, Stephen Holmes, a 2006 graduate of Bethune-Cookman University. Since 2019, Wildcat Wearhouse has been best-known for its exclusive collections of Bethune-Cookman inspired gear.

By the end of 2022, we realized that, while we loved creating dope apparel, we needed to be a more purpose-driven brand. The Ed Reed saga exposed some uncomfortable truths about Bethune-Cookman University and how we obtain and disseminate information regarding the institution. More specifically, the lack of trust in current leadership combined with a lack of informational integrity primarily on our social channels has made it difficult for the institution to be the very best version of itself. The good news is it doesn’t have to be this way.

Enter The Ave

If you’ve ever attended, visited, or even walked through the campus of Bethune-Cookman University, you’re probably familiar with Dr Mary Mcleod Bethune Boulevard. It’s the symbolic starting point for everything B-CU. It’s a gathering area, a chill spot, a landmark, and a photo opportunity. Goombay, the homecoming parade, protests, Sunday night ride-throughs, and a plethora of other events and activities all take place right on The Ave.

Good things happen here. Not so good things happen here. Things we are never to speak of happen here. For better or worse, The Ave has seen a lot. But that’s what makes it so special. It embodies all that is Bethune-Cookman. Those individuals, their stories, and the events need a repository – a digital repository. Students deserve a platform to express themselves through new media. Alumni deserve a space where they can connect and build support through digital technology. Community leaders and institutional stakeholders deserve an outlet that provides vital points of view regarding the matters of Bethune-Cookman University.

Trust & Transparency

More critically, The Ave aims to restore trust and openness. Better communication benefits everyone. Furthermore, the US Constitution provides us the freedom to free press, and when it comes to B-CU, we should not be scared to raise critical questions and demand answers.

While we acknowledge that B-CU is a private institution that is under no duty to reveal internal information to us or the general public, we believe that good use of digital media and the press may assist offer clarity and reestablish confidence with students, alumni, and leadership. We also feel that building a strong yet objective relationship with institutional leaders, administration, and the school in general will help. This is the most efficient path ahead.

While we recognize that B-CU is a private institution with no obligation to provide internal information to the public, we believe that effective use of digital media and the press can help bring clarity and reestablish trust between students, alumni, and leadership.

Stephen Holmes- The ave, founder

The Ave will also continue to honor the students, alumni, and leaders who uphold Dr. Mary Mcleod Bethune’s legacy. Her mantra of Enter to Learn and Depart to Serve will live on throughout this digital experience. We’re not here to stir up trouble; rather, we’re here to provide a different perspective that will hopefully lead to greater clarity and understanding amongst Wildcats.

In short, The Ave is virtual town square for B-CU wildcats. This is a place to share news and stories, appreciate art, encourage one another through faith, and honor those who continue to carry on Dr. Mary Mcleod Bethune’s legacy. We believe in empowering voices, celebrating people, and igniting change.

All Hail to Thee.
